SAXON: Interview, Performance Footage From DOWNLOAD Festival Available

June 15, 2010

The Lowdown's Kylie conducted an interview with British heavy metal legends SAXON backstage at this year's Download festival, which was held June 11-13, 2010 at Donington Park, United Kingdom. Watch the chat below. Also available is fan-filmed video footage of the band's performance at the event.

SAXON's new DVD documentary, "Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie", recently landed at position No. 3 on the official midweek U.K. Music DVD chart. The film narrowly lost out to MICHAEL JACKSON at No. 2 and U2's new release at No. 1. It's a massive achievement for the DVD, which was made without the backing of a record company and which was funded by the fans.

The six-hour-long limited special edition package, including the feature-length doc, two classic concerts and a series of often-hilarious mini-films, was officially released this week. Producers Coolhead say there are now only 3,000 copies left.

SAXON are true heavy metal heroes. Their story is a classic rock 'n' roll saga: five friends from the backstreets of Yorkshire setting out to take on the world. The resulting chart glory, mixed with band infighting and full-on rock excess, ensures their dramatic tale will become part of heavy metal history.

This feature-length documentary film tells the full warts-and-all story of 30 years of heartache, earache, success and excess. Produced by critically acclaimed documentary filmmakers Coolhead, it not only has contributions from SAXON, past and present, but also from the likes of Lars Ulrich (METALLICA),Lemmy and "Fast" Eddie Clarke (MOTÖRHEAD),Harvey Goldsmith, AIRBOURNE, AMON AMARTH, Doro Pesch and many, many others. It also features freshly-uncovered archive material, including the band performing in 1979 on MOTÖRHEAD's "Bomber" tour, recording sessions and interviews from the "Crusader" and "Innocence is No Excuse" albums, a classic concert from 1981, along with stunning headline performances at Wacken Open Air in 2009 and the now-legendary inaugural St. George's Day show in London. The whole production was funded by SAXON's army of loyal fans, who pre-ordered copies of the film before it was completed, providing Coolhead with the budget to make the film.
